An Elegant and Historic Place to Unwind
At the VanWinkle Inn, we have many years of experience in the hospitality/service industries. Our goal in purchasing this exquisite 1830 Georgian Colonial was to create an atmosphere of comfort where one could unwind and rest, while experiencing some of our country's greatest natural wonders hidden away in the Catskills. This is the land of Rip Van Winkle and  "Henry Hudson's lost crew"!  This historic Inn was originally constructed in 1830 by Isaac Robbins.  It is believed that he was a wool merchant and know that the road in front of the Inn was a farm to market route into the NYS "frontier:.   At the same time, they constructed what was the first supply/grocery store and were 'runners' of sugar and flour during the Civil War. The tin type picture to the right shows them loading supplies onto their wagons as local gentlemen walked the road greeting one another.  Note that not all the shutters on the house have been put up yet and the second addition in the back does not exist yet. Years later, the house and store were bequeathed to Isaac son's George and Horace.  Later in history,  it was passed onto Ezra Winn, who was George's "man".  He brought his brother-in-law, Al Bryant, on board and they ran the grocery store for years till Al moved it to what is now Bryant's Square in town.  Later, Howard Adriance owned the store which many locals fondly knew as "The Blue Churn" and the Palmers created "The Country Gentleman Antiques" which operated in the store until approx. 2007.  The country store has re-opened and is once again home for prized antiques, Alpaca wear, and  many other local products such as maple syrup and organic soaps by Ladybug Lee!  Come visit  VanTiques Gallery!  Shopping here will be reason enough to come visit us!
